EURO TOUR 2024

In 2024 I’ll be in Europe from May 14th to June 4th to give Brazilian percussion workshops. You can choose between two different types of workshop. The first is called “Traditional samba from Rio de Janeiro”, in which we’ll see: the samba basic patterns, instruments technique, the role of each instrument, the characteristics of Rio’s most traditional baterias; the elements of arrangement and the Bossas, the Breaks. In this workshop I approach the basic characteristics of samba plus the new inventions (new breaks, new grooves) that the baterias are doing for the carnival 2023. Is fresh information straight from the source.

The other option is the “contemporary batucada” workshop. In this one I teach Instruments technique and elements of arrangement as well but is focused on doing adaptations of grooves from Brazilian popular culture, like maracatu, côco, maculelê, jongo, among others and funk, pop and shuffle grooves as well.

In this tour I’ll be releasing my new percussion course called “Samba School Drumming Course”. So if you’re interested in bringing me to your city or university to teach your percussion group or if  you want more information about the tour send me a message to mail@sambabeats.com.br. I’ll love to have you in this journey through Brazilian music! See you there!

This tour is supported by Contemporânea Percussion Instruments and Kalango

Gabriel Lopes

I’m a professional musician since the beginning of the 2000s. Since the beginning I have actively participated in the Rio’s Carnival. At this stage I joined Monobloco, where I act as a musician and teacher since then. With Monobloco I recorded two albums and two DVDs. As a teacher I have been teaching for over 10 years in Monobloco workshops, preparing students for the carnival parades in Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and São Paulo. I also teach at music schools and I tour in Europe, UK and USA teaching the percussion of the samba schools’ baterias. With my online courses I teach to people from all over Brazil and Japan as well. I am the Drum Master of Volta Alice, a carnival group that has been parading around the streets of Laranjeiras neighbourhood since 2005. The group brings together an average of 10,000 merrymakers and the bateria plays with approximately 120 drummers. I am a researcher of samba schools’ baterias and to share my research I wrote three books: Fundamentals of s Samba School Bateria, As Bossas do Mestre Maurão and Mestre Dudu: As Paradinhas da Não Existe Mais Quente.
