The History of Samba

Told in English for the first time

A 13-video course for musicians and educators who want to understand where samba really comes from.

Samba is one of the most recognised musical genres in the world. But its history, the real story of how it was created and shaped into what it is today, has never been told in English.

Most accounts give you the surface version. This course goes deeper.

What you'll learn

To understand samba, you need to look at four threads that almost never get discussed together:

• The evolution of musical genres in Brazil — the context that made samba possible
• The abolition of slavery — how the African roots of samba’s creators shaped the music they invented
• The creation of the samba schools — and how Carnival forged the genre into its definitive form
• The recording industry — and the role it played in consolidating and spreading samba worldwide

The course is 13 videos. Each one goes into depth on the people, the events, and the decisions that made samba what it is. The course also includes curated playlists – so you can listen to the music as you learn its history.
