Also known as Salgueiro, the Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Acadêmicos do Salgueiro is the full name of one of the most traditional samba schools in Rio de Janeiro. Originally from Morro do Salgueiro, it was founded on March 5, 1953, as the result of the merger of two samba schools: Azul e Branco do Salgueiro and Depois Eu Digo. The school colours are red and white.
Acadêmicos do Salgueiro has nine titles of Rio de Janeiro’s carnival, in the years 1960, 1963, 1965, 1969, 1971, 1974, 1975, 1993 and 2009.
Bateria
Salgueiro’s bateria is also known as Furiosa. Its caixa section has taróis and hollow (without a body) caixas em cima, playing the partido-alto groove. The surdo 3 players are free to make variations. Furiosa doesn’t have agogôs section, but uses some repiques mores in the repiques bossa section.
Furiosa has won the Estandarte de Ouro nine times in 1973, 1975, 1984, 1993, 1998, 2000, 2003, 2008, 2014. The most important bateria director in the history of Furiosa was Mestre Louro, who leaded it alone and with partners for 29 carnivals. Since 2019, the bateria first directors are the brothers Guilherme Oliveira and Gustavo Oliveira.
