Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel, also known as Mocidade Independente, is originally from the Padre Miguel neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro. Its colours are green and white.
The samba school was founded by a football team, the Independente Futebol Clube, on November 10, 1955, by Sílvio Trindade, Renato da Silva, Djalma Rosa, Olímpio Bonifácio (Bronquinha), Ary de Lima, Jorge Avelino da Silva, Orozimbo de Oliveira (Seu Orozimbo), Garibaldi F. Lima, Felipe de Souza (Pavão), José Pereira da Silva and Alfredo Briggs.
Mocidade is six times champion of Rio de Janeiro’s carnival, in the years 1979, 1985, 1990, 1991, 1996 and 2017.
Bateria
Mocidade’s bateria nickname is Nao Existe Mais Quente, it’s considered one of the most important bateria of Rio’s carnival, which had, for many years, Mestre André, considered by many the greatest bateria director of all times and recognized for having invented the paradinha (bossa). Other inventions came from this bateria, such as the surdo 3 and the modern tamborim arrangement.
Mocidade’s bateria play in a unique way. There, the tuning of surdos 1 and 2 is inverted: surdo 2, which plays in the first beat and third beat of the bar, has a larger diameter and lower pitch than surdo 1, which plays in the second beat and fourth beat and has medium diameter and pitch. In Mocidade’s bateria, the surdos tuning is: surdo 1 (medium pitch), surdo 2 (low pitch) and surdo 3 (high pitch). This is a very interesting characteristic, since one of the most striking features of samba is the strong beat in beats 2 and 4 of the 4/4 bar. In this bateria, they subvert this samba characteristic, putting the bass playing on beats 1 and 3.
Another striking feature of this bateria comes from the caixa section, which uses only caixas embaixo that plays a unique groove, unlike other samba schools. It also has a two-mouthed agogôs section, being one of the few baterias to maintain this tradition.
The inverted surdo tuning and the caixa embaixo groove give a unique and unmistakable sound to this legendary bateria.
Nao Existe Mais Quente has won the Estandarte de Ouro six times: 1974, 1976, 1991, 1992, 2001 and 2018. Currently, the bateria director is Mestre Dudu, who has been leading it since 2012.
