The Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Estação Primeira de Mangueira is also known as Mangueira. It was founded on April 28, 1928, but some researchers claim that the correct year of its foundation is 1929. Mangueira was one of the first three samba schools to emerge, along with Portela and the mythical Deixa Falar, and became one of the most popular samba schools in Rio de Janeiro.
Among its founders are great names in the history of samba, such as Cartola, Carlos Cachaça, Zé Espinguela and Saturnino Gonçalves. In addition to these, the founders were: Euclides Roberto dos Santos (Seu Euclides), Marcelino José Claudino (Maçu da Mangueira), Pedro Cain (Paquetá) and Abelardo da Bolinha.
The colours of Mangueira are green and pink. She is the second biggest champion of the Rio de Janeiro’s carnival with a total of 20 titles conquered in the years 1932, 1933, 1934, 1940, 1949, 1950, 1954, 1960, 1961, 1967, 1968, 1973, 1984 (superchampionship), 1984, 1986 , 1987, 1998, 2002, 2016 and 2019.
Bateria
The Mangueira’s bateria nickname is Tem que Respeitar Meu Tamborim and its main feature is its surdo section, as it does not use surdo 2 or surdo 3 like the other baterias. In fact, it plays with surdo 1 and a surdo mor, which is a small surdo, played with a wooden stick.
His caixa section has only caixas embaixo playing a syncopated groove that is only played at Tem Que Respeitar Meu Tamborim. All these characteristics give Mangueira’s bateria a unique and unmistakable sound.
The most important bateria director in the history of this samba school was the legendary Mestre Waldomiro, who was in charge of the Mangueira’s bateria for 48 years. Tem Que Respeitar Meu Tamborim won the Estandarte de Ouro twice (1990 and 2011). Nowadays Mangueira has two Drum Masters: Taranta Neto and Rodrigo Explosão.
