The Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Império Serrano, known simply as Império Serrano, is a samba school originally from Morro da Serrinha. It was founded on March 23, 1947 by dissidents from the Prazer da Serrinha samba school. Its colours are green and white.
Among its founders are important names in the history of samba, such as Sebastião Molequinho, Elói Antero Dias (Mano Elói), Mano Décio da Viola, Aniceto Menezes (Aniceto do Império), Antônio dos Santos (Mestre Fuleiro) and Eulália do Nascimento.
Império Serrano was nine times champion of Rio’s carnival, in 1948, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1955, 1956, 1960, 1972 and 1982.
Bateria
Império Serrano’s bateria nickname is Sinfônica do Samba. In its caixa section there are only caixas embaixo playing a syncopated groove. In addition, its known for a four-mouthed agogô’s section and was the first bateria to have a section of this instrument.
The Sinfônica do Samba has won the Estandarte de Ouro nine times, in 1982, 1983, 1987, 1994, 1997, 2002, 2004, 2007 and 2009. Mestre Vitinho is the current bateria director of Império Serrano.

Rehearsals and events
Império Serrano’s bateria rehearsals take place on Tuesdays at 8 pm, in the samba school’s quadra. There are also other rehearsals, feijoadas and other events. Always check the samba school’s official channels (Website, Facebook, Instagram…) to confirm that rehearsals and events are going ahead.
