The Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Imperatriz Leopoldinense, or simply Imperatriz Leopoldinense, was founded on March 6, 1959 by Amaury Jório together with remnants of Recreio de Ramos, an old samba school in the Ramos neighbourhood. The colours of this samba school school are green, white and gold.
It is eight times champion of Rio de Janeiro’s carnival, in 1980, 1981, 1989, 1994, 1995, 1999, 2000 and 2001.

Imperatriz’s bateria nickname is Swing da Leopoldina and its caixa section has only caixas em cima playing the groove known as partido-alto.
Mestre Beto is the most important bateria director in the history of this bateria, he commanded it, alone or with partners, for 25 years. Since 2016 Mestre Lolo is the bateria director. Swing da Leopoldina has not yet won the Estandarte de Ouro award.
